I have choosen a rather different type of advocacy advertising. Here, is a advertisement done by the NYC Health Department to promote healthy eating. Deciding to take the risk, they have chosen a scare approach where the advertisement would make you feel rather uncomfortable especially if you are one of those on going the problem or might be getting into it. Hence, this advertisement would work best on a person that has similar problems and people who enjoy sugar based beverage or food. Here, we have a man that is above the average weight with a amputated leg. Confirming on how he lose the leg was due to diabetes which is commonly caused by intaking too much sugar. Hence, this would make people think a thousand miles feeling scared on whether this same problem will encountered by them. It would take a bigger hit on people that are above average weight or people whom loves sugar. The colors used are rather well portayed as this is a public service announcement, Red and black are usually the color of danger.

This is truly and advertisement that is stand out among the crowd, the idea is really out of the box. They are providing a fact that the portion of foods provided in this era is much larder and bigger than before, hence they should be aware of getting infected by Diabetes that might lead them to an amputation. I agree with Irene that the color in this advertisement truly set the mood of the message. Overall, this ad has successfully conveyed their message to the public, very smart finding Irene!

This ad approach is one of the classic approaches that show the cause and effects , The scare tactics. In this case is to promote healthy eating by the NYC Health Department. The Images that is shown is truly scary, but it could be an effective way in order to deliver the message to the audience. It’s a warning to the people as reminder that the effects of having too many sugar which is shown by an obese man with only one leg because of diabetes. The Headline “Can lead to amputation” will definitely make the audience think twice now every time they consume sugar. Personally I’m not too keen with the scare tactics. Why? I feel that by showing a scary facts and images or data/ statistic about death toll’s which they usually shown on the ad can make the people pessimistic rather than being optimistic. It’s not a good motivation for the people that would like to fight back. I feel that is a bit risky by approaching this tactic

This is definitely an effective ad because health ads always create fear to audiences so that they are more aware of their health. Yet, this ad is less revolting compared to other health issue ads (ciggarettes) but it works as good as those revolting ones. At the beginning of launching the cancer awareness ad on cigarettes, most smokers think that it is rather disgusting, but after quite sometimes, smokers got used to it and they are not bothered by it anymore. In fact, I've seen other countries cancer awareness ad that tells a story of how smoking leads to ciggarettes. This might work better because people will remember the story. Leave a Reply. |
